cockatiel first aid Cockatiel First Aid
Cockatiel’s First aid!?

So a friend’s cockatiel fell and possibly hurt his wing…he is walking around squeaking every once in a while and holding his wing out. He seems to be in pain and having trouble. Since it’s Sunday the avian vet is closed and the emergency vet in the area said they cannot treat him until tomorrow for some reason. Does anyone have any first aid ideas or wraps for his wing?

Any help is appreciated!
I guess he seems to have a feather that’s kind of out of place and bent, perhaps that’s what is hurting him. Its under his wing, can it be plucked?

Yes, the feather can be “plucked” (the term is called “pulled”). If the feather is a blood feather (a feather that has not finished growing), then be careful! If the feather is bleeding then the bird has probably broken the quik of the growing feather, and the bleeding needs to stop ASAP.

If you have to pull the feather make sure: 1. You have corn starch at the ready to stop bleeding. 2. While restraining the bird ***don’t*** constrict his chest. Birds have 6 air sacs and this is where they are located. If the chest is constricted he won’t be able to breathe. http://adriennegarbiel.com/2nd%20semester%20marine%20bio/images/denton_diagram.jpg

Good luck!

pet first aid Pet First Aid
what things do i need to know before starting a pet sitting service?

I already pet sit, but I want to start an offical business, what things do i need to know? Would like to hear from a anyone who has this businesss. do i need training in first aid? insurance? Anything you could tell me is great.

I had a pet sitting business for 7 years.. it is a lot of fun…but a lot of work as well. I did have a lot of pet knowledge before starting it as I worked as a vet tech for several years, so was able to handle emergency type situations,as well as treating diabetic animals and animals on medications and animals on fluid treatments…so animal experience is a big plus! You will need insurance and should also get bonded. Here are a couple of good websites to get you started. The pet sitters associations offer insurance and bonding at reasonable rates.

Improving Anorexia And Bulimia Treatment And Recovery Is The Goal

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

The average length of time that person struggles with an eating disorder is about 7 years; a period that many top professionals in the field consider too long, and unacceptable. Many therapist who specialized in eating disorder treatment have been using the same approach and techniques for decades with less than impressive results. Professionals without specialized training often end up with patients who show little progress or, worse yet, complicate the situation even more. A major source of the less-than-stellar treatment success is the fact that treatment professionals often are not up-to-date on recent developments in their field. For many, the time it takes to run their practice can leave little time to pour through scientific journals and remain current in their field.

With eating disorder treatment, much of the research published gets reported in an array of various journals that are not available to most providers or are simply cost prohibitive. Subscribing to all the necessary journals would cost tens of thousands of dollars. National and international conferences, while very important and helpful, are also cost and time prohibitive. The Eating Disorder News Network (EDNN) is trying to fill in some of this gap in an effort to keep professionals and patients on the cutting-edge of information at www.EatingDisorderNews.com , a new and unique site for the field.

“It has been my experience that too many professionals and providers who see eating disorder patients have always been significantly behind the learning curve when it comes to evidence based treatment approaches and research findings,” states Dr. Marc Schwartz, a child and adult psychiatrist in Arizona who has a large eating disorder practice. “It’s great to see a site like this where I can go to once a week and get a brief newscast that keeps me current with recent research.” While some in the medical field often prefer treatment that is “evidence based,” the field of eating disorders often is disjointed and has been operating more as an art-form than as a medical practice.

“At times I think the public and profession forgets that an eating disorder is first and foremost a serious medical condition with a very high rate of death if not properly treated,” reports Dr. Jeffrey DeSarbo, a Board Certified Psychiatrist and Producer of the EDNN. The public, patients and their families often are not aware that eating disorders have the highest mortality of any of the psychiatric conditions. “I think a site like the eating disorder news network can also build awareness to potential patients who think that they can simply go to any doctor, therapist or nutritionist for treatment. I think the newscast section of the site definitely sends a message to patients and inexperienced treatment providers that you need specialist when treating an eating disorder,” states Dr. DeSarbo.

Now, treatment providers including physicians, therapists and nutritionist can spend just a few minutes a week on the EDNN site and be able to demonstrate their knowledge in their practice. To learn more, go to www.EatingDisorderNews.com and tour the site.

Natural Treatments Of Gout

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

Gout, also called gouty arthritis, is a chronic disorder of uric acid metabolism. It is revealed as acute attacks of a form of arthritis in which crystals of uric acid compounds appear in the synovial fluid of joints. The disease also is marked deposits of urate compounds in and around the joints of the extremities; these frequently lead to joint deformity and disability. The disease affects more men than women, usually appearing after the age of 30. Among women, gout usually appears after menopause

Symptoms of a gout toe include intense pain, redness of the infected toe, and swelling of the infected area. A patient may think that he or she has broken his toe. The suspicion of a broken toe leads to him making a doctor’s appointment. The doctor will quickly determine the real cause of the pain. Gout treatments include avoiding purine rich foods. The doctor will most likely give a gout patient prescription painkillers.

Alternative treatments of an acute attack of gout may involve bed rest, immobilization of the affected part and local application of heat or cold. Management of gout also may involve attempts to control the rate of uric acid formation by having the individual follow a low purine diet. Such a diet excludes sweetbreads, liver, kidney, poultry, fish, alcohol, rich pastries, and fried foods. To promote uric acid clearance by the kidneys, individuals with gout will usually be encouraged to drink fluids frequently.

Gout occurs when there is too much uric acid in the blood. Certain individuals are more prone to get gout, including males over the age of 30, people who have a history of gout running in the family, individuals who are overweight, those who consume more than two alcoholic drinks daily or two carbonated beverages sweetened with sugar, cigarette smokers, those who regularly use diuretic medications and those who include abundant amounts of red meat, poultry, yeast and seafood in their daily diets.

Beef, iron, and pork are also purine rich foods, but these meats do not usually cause gout if they are consumed in moderation. Game meat may also contain high amounts of purine, although most people do not consume a large amount of game meat as part of a modern diet.

There have been concerted efforts in recent times to harmonize natural herbs and plants extracts in order to get rid of the cause of gout, achieve instant relief and permanently cure gout. These efforts gave birth to Goutezol, a produxt now in the market. It is arguably the best cure for gout.

First Aid At Home

first aid at home First Aid At Home
When a person get a spider bite should they get first aid at their home?

What can they do at the house?

First, for Red Fox: It only takes a few minuets for venom from
a spider bite to enter your system. itching and maybe swelling
are the indications that the venom ‘has done its job’. there is
nothing to ‘draw out’.
Growing up in a place I call “bug central”, we also had spiders.
lots of them. every type size and description.
at least once a week, one of us would get a spider bite, usually
grass spider. These will leave a very itchy welt for a couple days,
and aside from applying a little mentholatum to minimize the
itch, we just ignored spider bites. There is nothing significantly
different between a spider bite, mosquito bite, ant sting, etc..
Ticks and mosquitos are of higher concern, as these are vectors
for diseases.
People always say ‘well what about poisonous spiders’.
Many people will never even get a spider bite, much less a
poisonous one. You will know in a couple hours if a spider bite
is poisonous, and if you are in fair health, even a doctor may
just tell you to go home and put ice on it. Children, elderly, and
those with allergies or heart conditions are mostly at risk.
If you get a bite and experience unusual symptoms or systemic
reactions( sweating, nausea, cramps, breathing stress) you
should see a doctor, otherwise bites can often be ignored.
